Case study · LiftLabb

LiftLabb. Built for my own training.

A lift tracker on the web with an iOS beta on top of it. It's what I point at when somebody asks whether I've finished an app.

The setup

The client on this one is me.

Every tracker I tried made writing a set down take longer than the set. You finish a heavy triple, you're out of breath, and then you're three menus deep tapping in 225 for 3. I'd quit logging halfway through a session and try to remember the rest on the drive home, which never worked, so the numbers I was training off were half made up. I built the one I wanted instead.

Nobody pays me for this one and there's nobody to hand a bug to, which is why it's on this page. I'm also the one using it at 6am, so I hit the bugs before anyone else does.

The build

What I built.

You say a set out loud in the middle of a workout and LiftLabb writes down the weight, the reps and the reps in reserve without you touching the screen. 200+ exercises are built in so you pick a name off a list and keep moving. It catches a personal record on its own. It charts your estimated one rep max per muscle group, so after eight weeks you can see whether the block did anything. It logs with no signal and syncs when you're back, because gym wifi is bad in every gym I've been in. And you can run somebody else's program out of the community list if you don't want to write your own.

Today

How it runs now.

It's live at liftlabb.ca and the iPhone version is still in beta. It's my own product, so the upkeep is on me.

People tell me when something's broken and I fix it, which is the part that matters if you're hiring me. Building the first version is the easy part. The hard part is the month after launch when real people are using it and things break, and this one has been through that. Your build gets the same hosting and the same upkeep, on the monthly subscription I quote with it.

Tell me the app you want and I'll put a number on it.

Free, 30 minutes. Describe the app in a paragraph and you leave with a scope and a fixed price whether you hire me or not. The price, what a build includes and what gets quoted on top are all on the apps page, and you can click through a working demo of LiftLabb before you book anything.

Or open liftlabb.ca first and email cole@flxw.ca with what you'd want different.
